The line is a reconstruction, not 59 observed market prices. 11 reference anchors and 48 interpolated years. Different cars, conditions and fee bases; no constant-quality adjustment. The 1969–1999 path is unobserved. 2026 is a snapshot, not a completed year.

2026

The reconstruction links selected references geometrically. It does not discover missing prices or prove an appreciation cycle. Each published result concerns another car. Select a marker to inspect its source and caveats.

Three things the line cannot say.

01 / Inflation

11.9× ≠ 11.9×

The 2026 guide average is 11.9 times the original US MSRP in nominal dollars. After US inflation, that comparison is about 1.24 times. It is not an investment return: acquisition, restoration, maintenance and selling costs are absent.

S02 · S21 · S22 / CALCULATED COMPARISON

02 / Condition

$42,000 → $73,000

The same chassis, 12871055, sold in 2019 and 2020. Extensive refurbishment took place between sales. The 73.8% price difference is not evidence of a 73.8% market return.

S08 · S10 / REPEAT SALE, CHANGED CONDITION

03 / Selection

$128,800 / $11,111

A high result in 2022 and a restoration project in 2026 do not establish a market collapse. The highest selected result, projects and a condition-sensitive sale remain visible, but do not set the central anchors.

The car still needs
its own appraisal.

The owner’s archive identifies the car and its delivery history. A defensible current valuation also requires an inspection and a comparable-sale adjustment sheet; the website alone cannot establish condition or originality.

  • 01 / Verify chassis, engine, transmission and factory records.
  • 02 / Inspect structural corrosion, repairs and restoration quality.
  • 03 / Confirm original soft-window specification, colour and trim.
  • 04 / Test drivetrain, roof, seals and electrical equipment.
  • 05 / Match jurisdiction, taxes, transaction channel and fee basis.

Every year. Every label.

59 ROWS / 1968–2026

The annual figure is a reference-model output, not a certified quotation. An observation in a year does not make the interpolated reference an observed market average.

YearReference / USDBasisAnchor intervalEvents

Display rounded to the nearest 100 currency units to avoid false precision; full calculations remain in the data files. 2000 uses a 7,000-dollar lower-threshold proxy for an amount reported as slightly higher. No observed annual market prices are supplied for 1969–1999.

The evidence ledger.

18 EVENTS / NOT 18 IDENTICAL CARS

Original published USD amounts are preserved here, regardless of the chart display currency. Auction-house totals and winning bids have not been normalized. A published “sold” result is not independent proof of final settlement.

How the archive is built.

REV 1.0 / 24 SEP 2026
01 / Anchors, interpolation and the long evidence gap

The anchors are the 1968 model MSRP, the 2000 recollection proxy, selected sale references in 2006, 2007, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025, and the 2026 broad-model guide. Where two or more observations are selected in a year, their unweighted median is used. The selection is editorial, not an exhaustive sample. No hedonic or constant-condition adjustment has been made.

V(y) = V(a) × [V(b) / V(a)] ^ [(y − a) / (b − a)]

Between anchors, this is a mathematical bridge only. In particular, the model does not establish the nominal depreciation path during 1969–1999. No invented bottom, crisis dip or collector-market turning point has been added.

02 / Purchasing power and currency

Constant-dollar figures use published rounded annual US CPI references for 1968–2025 and the August 2026 CPI-U observation of 334.980 as the base. The 2025 annual reference is the publisher’s figure; the underlying monthly series has no October observation. No full-year 2026 CPI forecast is used. EUR mode divides USD by the single ECB rate of 1.1367 USD per EUR on 24 September 2026; it is not historical FX and does not turn US sales into European valuations. NLG 23,100 divided by the legal conversion rate 2.20371 is EUR 10,482 nominally, not in today’s purchasing power.

USD_Aug2026(y) = USD(y) × 334.980 / CPI(y)
EUR_fixedFX(y) = USD(y) / 1.1367
03 / Condition, fees, exclusions and limits

The 2022 high result, the 2023 condition-sensitive sale, two 2026 projects and the 2013 Targa of unconfirmed rear-window type are excluded from anchor selection, but remain in the ledger. The four-speed 2024 car is retained in the broad soft-window sample and explicitly labelled. Other selected cars also have varying repairs and condition. BaT/PCARMARKET entries use published winning bids; auction-house entries retain published totals with unresolved historical fee bases. This limits direct comparability. Asking prices, 911s, 912 coupes, 912Es and 1969 long-wheelbase cars are not used to calibrate the line.

04 / What is needed for a publishable market index

A genuine market index needs a sufficiently complete transaction history, verified sale dates and variants, consistent fee treatment, condition adjustments, duplicate-chassis control and an explicit weighting policy. Archived annual price guides could replace the early interpolation, with permission where required. Until then this is an independently researched reference archive, not a licensed or statistically validated price index.
